Sam is qualified teacher and dance / fitness Instructor from South Wales that specialises in Additional Learning Needs. During her professional teaching career, Sam taught a variety of subjects – French, drama, dance, PE and basic skills (literacy and numeracy) to pupils of all abilities and created schemes of work for pupils with Additional learning Needs. Her dissertation and body of work was used during SEN Lectures by PGCE lecturers and has been used in the school it was initiated in for the past 8 years, earning commendations from ESTYN the Welsh Schools Inspectorate.Having honed her skills in education, Sam is passionate about further developing basic skills and wellbeing within the ALN community; something that is often forgotten about after leaving full time education.
Alongside teaching, Sam has been a qualified fitness instructor for over 10 years utilising her 32 years of advanced dance training, which saw her compete and perform in London's' West End and Saddlers Wells on numerous occasions. She has been lucky enough to be a presenter and training team member for a national brand; which has given her the tools to further develop her skills. She holds many fitness qualifications including programming exercise for disability, exercise for older adults and children's fitness. For the past few years, Sam has developed ALN and inclusive classes all over Swansea and surrounding areas, working with colleges and day services to provide stimulating opportunities to those with ALN and disabilities. These classes have been recognised on a national level when Sam won UK Diversity and Equality Instructor of the year at the National Community Fitness Awards in Newcastle November 2017.. CanDo Hub have also won The Community Award at the South Wales Fitness Awards June 2018 and was runner up in Diversity and Equality Instructor of the year in addition to being shortlisted for the prestigious Contribution to community fitness award at the National Community Fitness Awards in November 2019. 2020 saw CanDo Hub be runner up in inspiring children and young people category, and Sam winning Welsh Instructor of the year 2020 in the National Community Fitness Awards.
Sam has worked with EMD UK, the national governing body for group exercise and dance fitness to endorse CanDo Hub in becoming a training provider for group fitness instructors, raising awareness of Additional Learning Needs. Her CPD Course Ability not Disability has provided instructors around the UK with the skills, knowledge and tools to develop their own ALN/ SEN classes. Sam has also launched a day provision for adults over 25 that have Additional Learning Needs, encompassing life skills, dance, drama, fitness, literacy, numeracy and a social enterprise to further develop skills and aid progression.
